Again!

Hello world! It's been a while again! I'm now working with CG and animation at Tribbo Post in São Paulo and it has been great so far! I'm still studing animation a lot but it's a little more difficult to keep the blog up to date now. I'll try to keep up better from now on... Here in Tribbo we use XSI and I made a little study of this character getting up and down a box (not exactly a box) to pratice some animation and some of XSI. It needs a lot of polishing but I think it's coming out ok! Tell me what you think!

Demoreel

Well, I´m looking for a job in animation now, so I decided to work on a demoreel to show some of my great animation skills! =D It´s not really finished yet (like almost everything I post here!) But, you can see some finished animations in there (like the "directions" clip and others. There´s a newer version of the "Stylin'" clip in there too! Check it out:

I'm back!

Well, I've been away for a while because I was moving to a new city. Now I'm living in São Paulo. I'm still organizing my stuff and transferring everything to my new computer. It's a little bit more complicated because I'm switching from a PC to a Mac. (Finally!!) I don't have much time to animate right now, so maybe I'll not participate on this month's animwatch challenge... :(
Anyway, I'm putting a newer version of the Stylin' clip here for you to watch and comment! Cheers!

CAPONES - Animation

Well, for those who don't know, I have a band and it's called CAPONES. Between 2003 and 2005, I've made some animations for videoclips and DVDs of the band. I created four characters in 3dsmax to caricature the band members and one of them is obviously me! I'll post something again about this character, but for now, you can see some of the animations I did with these guys here:

In this clip, I made everything. From modeling to final edit. The bg music is from "Man or Astro-Man" (GREAT BAND BTW) and the music is "Interstellar Hard Drive".

The animation itself is not good 'cause I wasn't really studying animation (like I am now) at that time. Just 3D in general. But I think the charcters are nice. They're kinda cute... :P

Now smoothed!

Smoothed but not finished! It still needs lots of polishing... and that's without mentioning the girl that I've didn't even touched... I had some little problems with this one, had to start it all over from scratch, that's why it took so long, but that's ok since I learned a lot of Maya. How to make hair and fur, lighting, rendering with mental ray, etc... It was pretty cool!

Oh, and I almost forgot! For those of you who use Maya if you want to play with these characters you can find them at highend3d. There are lots of rigs ready to animate there! These two are MooM and Andy. Cheers!

Blocking

Hey, first blocking!

And here's the transcription from animWATCH:

VOICE ONE:Tell me you're not really going out like that.

VOICE TWO:Of course I am, dear. Not that I'd expect you to understand. It's called Style.

VOICE ONE:You're going to wake the dead.

Poses

I'm trying to make the best "full of himself" poses, and this remembered me of one "Toy Story 2" scene when Woody gets out of the cartoon box feelling like he's the greatest cowboy of the wild west. I watched the scene a lot and it's a great reference. It became a classic today... If I can make something even near as good as that I'll bee very happy! I love Toy Story!

Layout

Ok, so here's the layout! Now it's a little bit clearer. You can see the camera positions, movements and cuts. It also reveals how the characters look and their positions. But it's all for now, no animation yet... =)

StoryReel

So, here's the storyreel! I know it's crappy, but since is only for me and I can understand it, it's OK!

New Clip!

Well, animwatch putted out a new challenge and it's about time for me to start posting some WIP! It's called Stylin' and I made some pose sketches and started the storyboard. I'll post a storyreel with the audio as soon as I finish it today! I also like to thank everyone (Luana, Gabi, Capanga, André, etc) for the comments dropped. Thanks!

Mike Rig

For those who don't know, I love Animation Mentor! I think it is by far the best on-line animation school in the world. Seein' their showreel, I noticed an interesting character whith just a head and a pair of legs and I thought it was great for basic motion studies.

Almost not terrible!

As I said, I'm still working on the "direction" clips, and I'm almost happy with it, because it's starting to feel like a "not terrible" animation! From the version that's in animclips finals I just changed the lil' blue guy. When I fix the other one, I'm finished! =P

About me!

In the rush for animclips, I’d forgot to post some things about myself to start the blog.

I'm a 3D artist from Fortaleza, Brazil! I´ve always loved animation since I was kid.
I started to work with computer graphics when I was 11! The very first 3D softwares I used were Autocad R12 and 3D Studio R3 (both for DOS!)
When I went to college, I started using 3dsmax and fell in love with it. I started to work in advertising and my college degree work was about animation. It was a great opportunity to study animation and buy a lot of books about the subject. I studied the history of animation and watched a lot of classic films and started to like animation even more! I decided to focus my CG work in animation, so I can be really good in it.

So, if I want to be a real good animator, that means I still have a LOT to study! I have to improve my drawing skills, study body mechanics, motion, corporal language, understand acting, etc. Besides that I need to learn other CG apps like Maya and XSI... Well, I've been a 3dsmax user for 7 years now! I really like 3dsmax and I think it have its own advantages, but, I need to be able to work with things like Maya if I want to get a Job as a 3D animator! The downside is that after 7 years, I'm feeling like a beginner again! Looking for basic tutorials and reading the help files looking for hotkeys and stuff... just to do things that I already know how to do, but in another package! Well, I started to learn Maya just 3 or 4 days before I entered the animclips contest so, learning a new software was not that hard... =P The "directions" clip was my first animation done in Maya!

Here is a compilation of tests I did while studying animation:

The first is a caricature of myself, then a bouncing ball, a CG Squash & Stretch test with a cylinder, two simple jumps, a pencil and paper walk test and, finally, a kick in the rubber ball! It's a lot of thing for such a short video!

Hope you enjoyed!

To the Finals!

Well, I uploaded the video to participate on the contest. It's not really finished yet, but it was the best I could do in such a short time! Hope they like it! Thanks!

More

Well, it sure needs lots of improvements, but it's coming out ok. I'm really woried about the time, but I think I'll continue to work on it a little bit even after the contest...

here's the new version:

Another Pass

Well, I'm already refining the lil' guy on the left! (The one on the right is still blocked...) I should have done other blocking passes but unfortunately, I don't have time... So, I jumped to the next stage and I'm kinda doin everything at the same time (offsets, eases, lipsync, etc...) Yeah, I better remember to start earlier the next time! Good luck for me!

The animclips challenge!

Well, I'm working on a scene for the animclips challenge http://www.animwatch.com/animclips.php and I just finished the StoryReel. I'm a little behind schedule because the "deadline is Mon, Jul 23, 2007 at 12 NOON (US Eastern Daylight Time, GMT -05:00. )"! Well, I'll try to do something even if is out of the competition, just because I want to pratice some dialogue. I'll post here as soon as I got something blocked out. Here's the sketches:

Hello Again
